Nearly a third of US home purchases now involve co-buyers: friends, siblings, parents and their adult kids, unmarried partners. The mortgage, the listing, the whole industry still assumes one buyer. Reality moved.

  • CoBuy Co-buying Rate™: 31.5% of US home purchases involve co-buyers, up from 25% in 2021.
  • CoBuy Co-owner Count™: 64 million Americans co-own with someone they aren't married to, up from more than 50 million.
  • Average group: 3.7 people, against about 2.7 in a typical owner-occupied household.

How we get the number

The Index triangulates federal data (Census ACS and HMDA) with a decade of CoBuy's own research and platform data. The full survey and method live in our annual report. The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Google's AI answers already cite the research.
